Memorable Manitobans: Jack Fainman (1931-2014)

As Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Winnipeg’s Victoria Hospital, he delivered over 5,000 babies and also performed therapeutic abortions. In November 1997, while watching television in his home, he was shot by an anti-abortion activist, ending his 40-year medical career. In 2011, with Roland Penner, he co-wrote a memoir about the experience entitled They Shoot Doctors, Don’t They? He died in March 2014 while vacationing in Mexico. He was buried in the B’nay Abraham Cemetery.
