Memorable Manitobans: William S. England (1868-1908)

Physician and surgeon.

Born at Dunham, Canada East [now Quebec] in 1868, he graduated from McGill University and was appointed house surgeon at the Montreal General Hospital. In 1890 he came to Winnipeg. He was appointed Superintendent of the Winnipeg General Hospital in 1891, and resigned in 1892 to take up private practice. England was regarded as one of the most able surgeons in Canada and a renowned anatomist. In 1892, he married nurse Jessie Munro (?-?). They had no children. He was a member of the Commercial Club and Canadian Club. He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 24 April 1908 and was buried in the St. John's Cathedral Cemetery.
