Memorable Manitobans: James Graham Donald (1931-1994)

Administrator, lawyer.

Born at Reston on 9 November 1931, son of Jim and Elsie Donald, after attending the University of Manitoba he worked at the Bank of Montreal in Brandon and Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Stricken with polio in 1953, he spent three years in hospital then returned home in 1956. For nearly 15 years, he served as the Administrator of the Reston Hospital and later the Melita Hospital. In 1970, he moved to Winnipeg and enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba. After graduation in 1973, he articled in Attorney General’s department, was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1974, and served as a provincial litigator until 1988 when he was appointed Chair of the Manitoba Municipal Board. He held the position until his death, which occurred at the St. Boniface Hospital on 2 October 1994.
