Memorable Manitobans: Oscar Domke (1927-2014)

Physician.

Born on 2 October 1927, he was raised near Libau and attended school at East Selkirk. In 1952, he received a medical degree from the University of Manitoba and worked for 57 years as a family doctor, serving as Director of the University of Manitoba Student Health Program (1954-1969), Director of Staff Health at the Health Science Centre (1970-1985), a Council member for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (1984-1988), and Medical Director of the Luther Home. For 40 years he was a member of the Misericordia General Hospital Department of Family Practice and was its Chairman. In recognition of his excellence as a physician, he received the Misericordia Hospital Ian Goldberg Meritorious Service Award (1998) and the Manitoba Medical Association Physician of the Year Award (2005). He held several positions with the Lutheran church and did missionary work in Africa. He died at Winnipeg on 7 May 2014.
