Memorable Manitobans: Charles C. Chick (1892-1947)

Lumber merchant.

Born in Austria on 18 August 1892, son of George Chick (1851-?), he came to Canada when he was 11 years old. In 1913, he founded the Chick Fuel Company at the corner of Luxton Avenue and Main Street in Winnipeg. He later added building supplies to his business and renamed it Chick Lumber and Fuel Company, by early 1933 moving to 1914 Main Street at the corner of Partridge Avenue. He purchased land between Arlington Avenue and McPhillips Street that he subdivided into residential properties, in some cases giving lots of needy families in exchange for an agreement to buy building materials from him. After his death, the business was carried on by his sons until 1966 when it was sold. He and wife Catherine Cecilia Reimer (1898-1986) had six sons: Archie Cyril Chick (1920-1984), Kenneth George “Ken” Chick (1921-2004), Leonard Carl Chick (1923-2007), Clarence Edward Chick (1927-2005), William “Bill” Chick, and John E. Chick (?-2010). He died at the St. Boniface Hospital on 7 February 1947 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
