Memorable Manitobans: George Camsell (1871-1957)

Physician.

Born at Fort Simpson, North West Territories on 24 November 1871, son of Julian Stewart Camsell and Sarah Foulds, in 1879 he was sent to Winnipeg where he attended St. John’s College and received a BA degree from the University of Manitoba. He then attended the Manitoba Medical College. After interning at the Winnipeg General Hospital, in April 1900 he moved to Austin where he practiced until 1930. At that time, he became the resident physician at Stony Mountain Penitentiary for several years.

On 12 December 1931, he married Mary Ethel Downie (1900-1937, daughter of Robert and Sarah Downie of Stony Mountain) at the Stony Mountain United Church. They had no children. He was a member of the Masons (Gothic Lodge) and Canadian Order of Foresters (Austin Lodge). He died at the Arcadia Nursing Home in Winnipeg on 21 January 1957 and was buried in the St. John’s Cathedral Cemetery.
