Memorable Manitobans: Edward Guy Bricknell (1905-1985)

Machinist, administrator.

Born in Durham County, England on 7 May 1905, son of William “Paddy” Bricknell and Agnes Bricknell, he and his family came to Canada in May 1910 and farmed in the Interlake until spring 1916. He moved to Winnipeg where he resided in 1936, completing his high school education and apprenticeship, followed by employment as a machinist at the Fort Rouge maintenance facility of the Canadian National Railway.

In 1936, he joined the employ of Winnipeg Hydro, serving as a machinist and heavy equipment operator on construction of the Slave Falls Generating Station. He moved to Pointe du Bois in 1939 and worked there until retirement. He was Superintendent of the Pointe du Bois Generating Station (1961-1970). In May 1970, he retired back to Winnipeg.

On 16 September 1931, he married Jessamine Ada “Jessie” Smith (1907-1996) at Knox United Church. They had a son, Edward Keith Bricknell.

He died at the Misericordia Hospital on 15 September 1985.
