Memorable Manitobans: Gertrude Bernard, aka Anahareo (1906-1987)Animal rights activist. Born at Mattawa, Ontario, she married Archibald Belaney (Grey Owl) and helped convert him to environmentalism while the couple were living in Riding Mountain National Park in the early 1930s. She remained involved in animal rights after the couple divorced in 1936. She wrote an autobiography, Devil in Deerskins: My Life with Grey Owl (1972).
