Memorable Manitobans: Ralph Esdale Baxter (1932-2020)Cleric. Born at Belfast, Northern Ireland on 8 February 1932, he attended the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and, after graduation, he worked briefly for an insurance company. Ordained into the Anglican ministry in July 1962, he served several Church of Ireland parishes and, in 1974, he participated in early peacekeeping initiatives with leaders of the Irish Republican Army. In May 1975, he moved to Manitoba where he ministered at St. Anne’s Anglican Church and St. Catherine’s Anglican Church. He then moved to St. John’s College at the University of Manitoba where he taught homiletics and was an author and editor of the report “Elders and Ministry.” He also served as Chaplain at St. John’s and was later interim priest at St. George’s Anglican Church, and was one of the co-founders of the Rupert’s Land Respite Care. He was Dean of St. John’s Anglican Cathedral from 1991 to retirement in 1996. In recognition of his community service, he received an honorary doctorate from St. John’s College and the 125th Anniversary of Confederation Medal (1992).
