Memorable Manitobans: Mary Eileen Bulman Abbott (1896-1980)

Community activist.

Born at Winnipeg on 5 July 1896, daughter of Lillian “Lily” Thompson (1871-1930) and William John Bulman, she attended Gladstone School, Kelvin High School, University of Manitoba (BA, BSc), and Columbia University. She served as the President of the University of Manitoba Students Association (precursor of the modern UMSU) from 1918 to 1919.

On 2 January 1925, she was married to Albert Clifford Abbott. She was an active member of the Winnipeg Winter Club, Canadian Figure Skating Association, and President (1972) of the Women’s Canadian Club of Winnipeg. She served on several committees of the Winnipeg Art Gallery. She received a City of Winnipeg Community Service Award (1975).

She died at Winnipeg on 9 August 1980 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
