Memorable Manitobans: John Elmer Woods (1892-1980)
Born at Toronto, Ontario on 16 August 1892, son of John Woods and Mary Ann Thompson, he entered the insurance business and came to Winnipeg before 1920. He rose to the position of President of the real estate firm Oldfield, Kirby and Gardner, stepping down in 1954. He was later Chairman of the Canadian Committee for the Hudson’s Bay Company, and President of the Monarch Life Assurance Company. He chaired the province’s Civil Service Superannuation Board and was a member of the Board of Governors for St. John’s-Ravenscourt School. On 29 September 1921, he married Mary Elizabeth Townsend (1893-1968) at Winnipeg. They had one son. He died at his Winnipeg home on 9 January 1980 and was buried in the St. John’s Cathedral Cemetery.
