Private banker.
Born at New Glasgow, Quebec on 10 November 1826, as a young man he moved to Montreal where he operated a dry goods store for several years. In 1878, he moved to Winnipeg where he had a private bank bearing his name. He and wife Joanna Gordon Hay (1843-1915) had seven children: Mrs. Wickson, Agnes Baxter Winks (1857-1904, wife of William Henry Culver), Isabella Marian Winks (?-?, wife of Alfred George Pinkham), George Albert Winks (1855-1925), W. C. Winks (?-?), Thomas G. Winks (1866-1945), and Charles Edward Winks (1873-1946). He died at Winnipeg on 14 July 1903 and was buried in the St. John's Cathedral Cemetery.
