Memorable Manitobans: Stella Rebecca White (1892-1991)Nurse. Born at Akureyi, Iceland in 1892, she immigrated to Canada in 1910. She graduated from the St. Boniface Hospital School of Nursing in 1914 and then trained further in obstetrics at the Soane Hospital for Women in New York City. She engaged in private nursing in Winnipeg while her husband served overseas in the First World War. During the flu epidemic of 1918-1919, she performed heroic service, nursing whole families through the illness. In 1920 she moved with her husband to Snowflake where she continued her nursing career while raising seven children.
