Memorable Manitobans: Ian Denys Turnbull (1935-2025)

Educator, MLA (1969-1973), MLA (1973-1977).

Born at Winnipeg on 1 July 1935, son of Matthew Turnbull, he received BA (1962) and MA (1967) degrees from the University of Manitoba. He began a teaching career in northern Manitoba before moving to schools in Fort Garry.

He was elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly at the 1969 general election and was re-elected in 1973. He served as Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs (1973-1976) and Minister of Education (1976-1977). He was defeated at the 1977 general election. He then returned to teaching until 1989 when he accompanied his wife to Asia where they lived and worked for a time. He retired to Victoria, British Columbia in 1993.

In 1961, he married Aleda Winnifred Woodworth at Augustine United Church and they had a daughter and a son. He was an active athlete, enjoyed reading, and played piano. He travelled extensively.

He died on 21 November 2025.
