He was married twice, first on 19 March 1897 to Hilda Christina Holst (1875-1907) at Winnipeg. They had two sons: Hugo Bernhard Swanson (1897-?) and Holge Anton Tudor Swanson (1900-?). He later married Anna Elizabeth Swanson (1885-1918). He died at Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1941 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
