Memorable Manitobans: William James “Jim” Swail (1937-2020)

Administrator.

Born at Winnipeg on 8 April 1937, in his youth he helped his father to care for racehorses at Polo Park and Assiniboia Downs. He graduated from Kelvin High School and received a baccalaureat degree in Physical Education and Masters in Administration from the University of North Dakota. He was President of the Manitoba Parks and Recreation Association, Canadian Parks and Recreation Association, and Public Leisure Council of Canada. He was instrumental in bringing pandas to the Assiniboine Park Zoo in 1989. He retired in 1992 as General Manager of Winnipeg Parks and Recreation. He died at Winnipeg on 15 November 2020.
