Memorable Manitobans: Ralph Sotolov (1924-2019)

Educator.

Born at Winnipeg on 14 May 1924, one of three children of Isidore Sotolov (c1894-1959) and Dora Palatnick (c1896-1993), he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War, remaining in the military after the war and working as an education officer. He was the Principal of Brookdale School (1950-1951) before returning to university and receiving an Education diploma, and BEd and MEd degrees. He taught science at Viscount Alexander School and then biology at Vincent Massey Collegiate in the early 1960s. He served as Vice-Principal (1965-1967) and Principal (1967-1987) at Vincent Massey until his retirement in 1987. He was married twice, first to Dorothy Zanewich (1924-1976) with whom he had a son, and second to Barbara Tessler (1939-1999). He died at Winnipeg on 19 December 2019 and was buried in the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery.
