Memorable Manitobans: Doris Shero Witiuk (1929-2014)

Athlete.

Born at Winnipeg on 22 May 1929, youngest of eight children of Alexander and Emilia Shero, sister of Fred Shero, she attended Isaac Newton High School then played baseball with the Canadian Ukrainian Athletic Club before moving to the United States in 1950. She played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League for the Racine (Wisconsin) Belles (1950-1951). She was nicknamed “Baser” for the speed with which she rounded the bases. In 1953, she married hockey player and fellow Winnipegger Steve Witiuk. They lived at Winnipeg in the late 1950s while Witiuk played with the Winnipeg Warriors then they moved to Spokane, Washington in 1962. She was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988. She died at Spokane on 26 January 2014.
