Memorable Manitobans: Herman Shapera (1872-1935)Tobacconist. Born in Romania on 25 May 1872, he came to Winnipeg with his family in 1902 and founded the Superior Wholesale Tobacco Company, serving as its President for more than 25 years. He and wife Ernestina Pecket (1872-1939) had six children: George Harold Shapera (1896-1987), Nathan Ernest Shapera (1900-?), Conrad Shapera (1902-?), Mollie Shapera (1901-?, wife of Benjamin Israel Gitterman), Earl Saul Shapera (1907-?), Sarah Shapera (1910-?). He was one of the organizers of the Beth Abraham Synagogue. He died at the St. Boniface Hospital on 3 December 1935 and was buried in the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. See also:
