Memorable Manitobans: Charles Nathan “Chuck” Rubin (1932-2022)

Lawyer, judge.

Born at Fort William (now Thunder Bay), Ontario on 23 October 1932, son of Polish immigrants Sam Rubin and Yhetta Dodyk, he graduated from Fort William Collegiate in 1951. He attended the University of Manitoba, serving as Arts Senior Stick, and received a BA degree in 1954.

He attended the Manitoba Law School, graduating in 1955, then practiced law to mid-1970s with the firm of Newman, MacLean and Associates. He was a magistrate in the Manitoba Provincial Court from 1966 to 2007, serving part-time from 1966 to 1975, and full-time until retirement in 2007 when he was believed to the province's longest-serving judge.

In the early 1960s, he met and married Naida Fingard and they had four children. He served as President of the Kinsman Club of Manitoba, Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, and Provincial Judges Association of Manitoba, and sat on the boards of the Society of Crippled Children and Adults of Manitoba, Winnipeg Police Board, Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (Chairman), and Jewish Federation of Manitoba Endowment Book of Life (Chairman). He was involved in the formation of the Winnipeg Jazz Festival.

He died at Winnipeg on 31 July 2022 and was buried in the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery.
