Memorable Manitobans: Frances Mary Jones Robertson (1903-1987)
Educator. Born at Birmingham, England on 12 December 1903, daughter of John Jones (1872-?) and Marry Jones (1874-?), she immigrated to Canada with her family in 1906, settling at Rapid City and later at Brookdale. She attended Brookdale School, Brandon Normal School, and earned a BA degree at the University of Manitoba. She became a teacher, working at Dempsey School (1922-1923), Austin School (1924-1926), Kelwood School (?-?), St. Jean School (?-?), and Timlick School (1931-1932), and was the Principal of Basswood School (1932-1935). On 19 October 1935, she married Lorne Edgar Robertson (1901-1981) and had two children. The couple settled on a farm at Basswood, farming there until her husband’s retirement in 1960, at which time they moved to Winnipeg. She died at the Grace Hospital on 29 December 1987.
