Memorable Manitobans: Donald William Rae (1931-1998)

Physician.

A family doctor in Portage la Prairie, he served as President of the World Organization of Family Doctors, and was named 1991 family physician of the year by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. In 1992, he was inducted into the Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt. His appointment to the Order of Canada in 1992 was criticized by some members of the medical community because Rae performed abortions. He died on 10 December 1998.
