Memorable Manitobans: Alfred James Poole (1910-1988)

Stock breeder.

Born at Kemnay on 15 October 1910, eldest son of Frederick Poole and Annie Sinkbeil, he attended Kemnay School before becoming a farmer. He was an important breeder of Belgian horses, Hereford cattle, and Yorkshire swine, and a winner of many championship awards. On 3 July 1937, he married schoolteacher Edith Alma Gauld (1906-2000) and they had two daughters and a son. He served as a trustee for the Kemnay School District and a board member for Kemnay United Church. He was made an honorary life member of the Manitoba Curling Association. He died at Brandon on 13 September 1988 and was buried in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens. He was inducted posthumously into the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame.
