Memorable Manitobans: Arthur William Moscarella (1893-1972)

Born at London, England on 2 December 1893, son of Alfred Moscarella, he apprenticed in advertising before moving to Canada in 1910 where he joined the publicity staff of the Hudson’s Bay Company in Winnipeg. He later established his own advertising agency in Winnipeg and, for a time, was Advertising Manager of the Regina Trading Company. While in Regina, he founded the city’s first advertising club and was its President.

He returned to Winnipeg in 1919 and joined the staff of the Winnipeg Tribune, serving successively as its Advertising Manager (1919-1938), Business Manager (1938-1946), Assistant Publisher (1946-1948), and Publisher (1948-1951). In the latter year, he moved to Vancouver, British Columbia where he was Vice-President and Publisher of the Vancouver Province until retirement in 1958.

On 27 December 1916, he married Margaret Lilian Townend (1892-1980) at St. Alban’s Anglican Church and they had three children: Raymond Alfred Moscarella (1917-1988), Irene Mary “Molly” Moscarella (1919-2004, wife of Garland Miller Horton), and Doris Evelyn Moscarella (1923-1993, wife of William Ernest Watling). He served as President of the Motor Country Club (1946-1951).

He died at his home in North Vancouver, British Columbia on 22 June 1972.
