Hardware merchant.
Born at Kirremuir, Scotland in 1862, he came to Brandon in 1881 and established the hardware business of Brown and Mitchell. In later years, it became Mitchell Hardware Limited, one of the largest of its kind in western Canada. In 1898, he went to Yukon in search of gold.
In 1893, he married Margaret McDonald Whitehead (1864-1931, daughter of Charles Whitehead) at Brandon and they subsequently had four children: Marguerite Mitchell (1894-?, daughter-in-law of William Verner Gordon), Charles Campbell Mitchell (1896-?), James S. Mitchell (1898-?), and John Cassop Peter Mitchell (1902-?). His residence at the southeast corner of Eighteenth Street and Rosser Avenue was said to be occupied an entire city block.
He died at Brandon on 13 May 1950 and was buried in the Brandon Cemetery. He is commemorated by Mitchell Street in Brandon.
