Physician and surgeon.
Born on a farm near Clearwater on 29 August 1886, one of seven children of Donald Gunn McIntyre (1855-1929) and Mary Elizabeth Leitch (1856-1929), he was educated at the Clearwater School and Brandon Collegiate, then received a First Class Professional Grade from the Brandon Normal School. In 1915, he received a BA degree in Arts from Queen’s University (Kingston) and began studies in Medicine before enlisting in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was posted to the No. 5 Stationary Hospital in Egypt for eight months. His unit returned to England and he went to Le Treport, France where he served from April 1916 to November 1917. His older brother John Malcolm McIntyre (1885-1916) was killed at The Somme and his younger brother William George “Bill” McIntyre BA MA (1888-1917) was killed at Vimy Ridge.
After his return to Canada, he completed medical training at Queen’s University. He worked as a temporary physician at Belmont, Tuxford (Saskatchewan), and Brownlee (Saskatchewan) and practised at Lucky Lake, Expanse, Assiniboia, Arborg, and Napinka before settling at Elgin in March 1924. He did a year of post-graduate work at the Vancouver General Hospital, performing surgery under Dr. Moffatt. He was a Coroner for Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and a Medical Health Officer for the Rural Municipality of Whitewater. He was a member of the Canadian Medical Association as well as the provincial associations in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Ontario.
On 3 July 1933, he married Caryl Moore Reynolds (1892-1992) at Winnipeg. He was a member of the Baptist church.
He died at Dutton, Elgin County, Ontario in 1964 and was buried in the Fairview Cemetery.
