Memorable Manitobans: David Gordon Mack (1919-2016)

Educator.

Born at Swift Current, Saskatchewan on 23 June 1919, son of Hamilton Robertson Mack (c1881-?) and Christina Maria Kelly (c1881-?), he attended Moose Jaw Normal School and earned his teaching certification. He taught within Saskatchewan at Orillia, Kyle, Stranraer, Stewart Valley, and Whitewood (c1947), as well as teaching mathematics at vocational schools to returning Second World War servicemen. During the school off seasons while teaching in Saskatchewan, he also held employment as a cook onboard freighters along the West Coast between Alaska and Vancouver.

He came to Manitoba as Principal of Teulon School (1948-1950) after which he moved to Calgary, teaching at Colonel Walker School, King Edward Junior High School, Queen Elizabeth School, and William Aberhart High School until retirement in 1980.

On 11 October 1947, he married Mary Eulah Ward (?-1981) at St. Mary’s Anglican Church at Whitewood, Saskatchewan and they had two sons.

He died at Calgary, Alberta on 24 June 2016.
