Building contractor, mushroom farmer.
Born at Bradford, Yorkshire, England on 25 April 1877, he came to Canada around 1904 and worked as a bricklayer. During the First World War, he served overseas with the 27th City of Winnipeg Battalion and was wounded at Vimy Ridge.
After his military discharge, he returned to Winnipeg and worked as a building contractor. He got into the business of mushroom growing when, in 1931, he constructed a small mushroom plant in Norwood. The client went broke before the operation began so Loveday took it over and, after touring mushroom farms in the USA, he gradually learned how to grow them. In 1932, he founded Manitoba Mushroom Growers (later renamed Loveday Mushroom Farms) which was continued by family members after his death.
He and wife Fannie Jane Dawson (c1881-1966) had three sons: Bertie Dawson “Bert” Loveday (1901-1956), Ernest Loveday (1907-1985) and George Edward Loveday (1910-1911). He was a member of the Masons (Prince Rupert Lodge), Royal Canadian Legion (Norwood Branch), Norwood Lawn Bowling Club, and Norwood United Church. He died at the Deer Lodge Hospital on 26 April 1969.
