Politician, municipal official, Mayor of Winnipeg (1879-1880, 1882, 1884).

Born at Fort Douglas on 5 November 1841, son of Robert Logan and Sarah Ingham, he was educated at St. John’s College. The Logan estate was situated on the banks of the Red River, at the foot of the present Logan Avenue, between George and Robert Streets, and extended for four miles. He was a Winnipeg City Alderman for many years, and Mayor in 1879-1880, 1882, and 1884. It became a tradition for every prominent Winnipegger to call on the Logans on Christmas Day. He was one of the founders of the Winnipeg Board of Trade, in 1873. He was a participant in the December 1878 ceremony to mark the opening of the first railway to Winnipeg.

In 1864, he married Maria Lane (1850-1902), a daughter of Richard Lane. They had twelve children: Mary Jane “Sally” Logan (1866-1934, wife of W. M. Bannatyne), Robert Edmund Alfred Logan (1868-1869), Anne Margaret Logan (1869-1901), Harriet Lillie “Lily” Logan (1870-1931), Alexander Henry Logan, Elizabeth Marie “Lizzie” Logan (1874-1955), Sarah Louisa “Queen” Logan (1876-1962), Owena Frances G. Logan (1879-1960), Richard Tecumseh Logan (1880-1881), Ella Minota Logan (1883-1883), Juanita ”Nina” Logan (1885-1886), and James Sydney Douglas Logan (1887-1949).

He died at his Winnipeg home on 23 June 1894 and was buried in the St. John’s Cathedral Cemetery. He is commemorated by Alexander Avenue in Winnipeg.
