Grain buyer, community activist.
Born at Gretna on 21 October 1895, son of Russian immigrants Peter Loewen and Catharina Gerbrandt, in the First World War he served with the Third Brigade, Machine Gun Company of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in France, Belgium, and Germany. During the Second World War, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps and was stationed in Britain for four years.
On 15 August 1925, he married nurse Ada Sherwood Howard (1898-1970) at Crystal City and they subsequently had seven children, including William Herbert “Bill” Loewen and Alice Katrina Loewen Chambers. The family moved to Elkhorn where he was a grain buyer for the Ogilvie Flour Mills from 1926 to 1950. He was a village councillor for seven years and a member of the Elkhorn School Board for six years. He was active with the Elkhorn branch of the Royal Canadia Legion. In 1950, the family moved to the Riverview area of Winnipeg where he lived until retiring to Victoria, British Columbia in 1975. While in Winnipeg, he was active with Fort Garry Unit 60 of Army, Navy, and Air Force Veterans.
In 1987, he was inducted into the Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt in recognition of his “involvement and commitment to his community”.
He died at Victoria, British Columbia on 5 April 1990.
