Memorable Manitobans: Ruth Soronow Levinson (1907-1985)

Educator.

Born in the Russian Empire on 25 June 1907, daughter of Max Soronow (1873-1950) and Rivka “Rebecca” Rosenwasser (1883-1959), and sibling of Robert Isaac Soronow and Morris Marvin Soronow. Having immigrated to Winnipeg, she resided with her family at 219 Stella Avenue (1921), 886 Dorchester Avenue (1931), and 78 Cathedral Avenue (1936).

She graduated from the University of Manitoba with a BA (1926) and began her career as an educator, among which she was Principal of Sprague School (1926-1927) before joining the teaching staff of the Winnipeg School District as a teacher at Riverview School (1928), Margaret Scott School (1929-1935), Alexandra School (1936-1938), and King Edward School (1938-1940). During the back-half of 1926, she took a six-month leave of absence, sailing for Britain aboard of the SS Empress of Britain.

On 17 December 1940, she married Benjamin G. “Ben” Levinson (1899-1985) at Chicago, Illinois and lived in the United States of America. She died on 14 November 1985 and was buried in Shalom Memorial Park at Arlington Heights, Illinois.
