Memorable Manitobans: Charles Thomas “Chuck” Lefley (1950-2026)

Athlete.

Born at Winnipeg on 20 January 1950, son of Jean and Bob Lefley, his childhood was spent on the family farm at Grosse Isle. At the age of 15, he began playing hockey with the Winnipeg Rangers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. He was a member of the Canadian Men's National Team at the 1969 World Championship in Sweden. In 1970, he was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens and won two Stanley Cups with the team, in 1971 and 1973. He played with the the St. Louis Blues from 1974 and played a year in Finland and Germany before retiring from hockey in 1981. He then returned to farming at Grosse Isle with his brother Glen. He was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame (1986) and Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame (2014). He died on 26 January 2026.
