Memorable Manitobans: Stanley Ernest Kolt (1929-2012)

Educator.

Born at Winnipeg on 23 August 1929 to Helen Vatrt (1909-1977) and Jozef “Joseph” Kolt (1892-1988), he pursued academic studies in science and education at the University of Chicago, University of Manitoba, and University of North Dakota, earning several degrees culminating in a Doctorate in Education.

He was active for many years as a teacher, consultant, and administrator in the Winnipeg School Division, including at Sisler High School (1963-1964). He participated extensively in several organizations, including as a member of the Board of the Manitoba Teachers' Society; President, board representative, and a lifelong member of the St. John Cantius Fraternal Aid Society; President and board representative of Czas, the Polish-language newspaper; and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He had a keen interest in and enjoyed discussing theology. His favorite writers included Saint Thomas Aquinas, Teilhard de Chardin, and Karl Rahner. He was a chorister and parishioner of St. Andrew Bobola parish, and, for over 25 years, attended daily mass together with his wife at the Holy Names House of Peace (former Franciscan Priory).

In 1958, he married Carmen Lavoie and they went on to have six children. With his family, he enjoyed spending time at the cabin at Albert Beach on Lake Winnipeg, and also travelling with them. Having a strong interest in photography, he frequently spent evenings with his collection of slides. He also loved music, especially opera, and saw his descendants carrying it on through singing and instrumental music pursuits of their own.

He died at Winnipeg on 22 September 2012.
