Memorable Manitobans: Gordon C. “Gord” Kerr (1932-2006)

Hockey referee and player.

Born at Winnipeg on 12 May 1932, he grew up in the West End with hockey as a life-long passion. He was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens and played several years of professional hockey in various leagues until his professional career was cut short by an industrial accident. He became one of the finest hockey officials ever produced in Manitoba. He was the Referee-in-Chief of the Manitoba Amateur Hockey association for over 30 years. He refereed in the Memorial Cup, Allan Cup, and Centennial Cup. He gained international notoriety by refereeing the 1972 Olympic Games in Sapporo, Japan and the 1976 Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria. He also refereed in the World Hockey Association for 7 years. He died of cancer at Kelowna, British Columbia on 22 December 2006.
