Memorable Manitobans: Bartholomew Brosnan Kelliher (1862-1929)Born in County Kerry, Ireland on 26 December 1862, one of seven children born to Johanna Brosnan and John D. Kelliher, he was educated at Dublin University. He came to America in June 1886 and worked as a civil engineer with the Union Pacific Railway (1887 to 1890), Northern Pacific Railway (1890 to 1896), Union Pacific Railway (1896 to 1897, and 1898 to 1903). He joined the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in January 1904. He was appointed its Chief Engineer in 1905 and moved office from Montreal to Winnipeg in 1909. He resigned in 1914 due to poor health and returned to Ireland for three years. He came back to the United States in 1917 where he worked in various railroading jobs until 1923 when he retired back to Ireland. In 1904, he married Anna Isabelle Souter (?-1908). He was a member of the St. James Club (Montreal) and Manitoba Club. In 1911, he lived at the Royal Alexandra Hotel in Winnipeg. He died at London, England on 7 November 1929.
