Memorable Manitobans: James Jackson Keith (1872-1949)

Educator.

Born in Ontario on 27 July 1872, he became a teacher and married Helen Georgia Carnegie (1874-1936) in the Rural Municipality of South Northfolk on 4 November 1898. They had four children: Helen Jean Keith (1902-?), Jessie Isbel Keith (1904-1928), James Alexander Keith (1908-?), and Gladys Evelyn Keith (1914-2001, wife of George Kovacs). He taught at Camille School (1897-1898), Selton School (?-?), Elm Creek School (1900-1901; Principal 1901), and likely near or in the Rural Municipality of Dufferin (1902) before moving to Saskatchewan between 1904 and 1908. The family resided at Saltcoats (1908) prior to settling at Waldron by 1911 where he taught for several years. He died in 1949 and was buried in the Waldron Cemetery.
