Memorable Manitobans: Ollie Hynduik (1928-2010)

Athlete.

Born in November 1928, eldest child of Martha Hancharuk (1906-1998) and Wasyl Hynduik (1903-1972), her notable athletic skills included bowling, golf, and baseball. She excelled in golf, winning many awards, and was a longtime member of the St. Boniface Golf Club. In 1963, she was one of the founders of the Ladies’ Nassau Golf League, which consisted of 12 Winnipeg teams. She also played catcher for the Canadian Ukrainian Athletic Club Senior Ladies Fastball Team.

Bowling was her preferred sport, and in 1952 she bowled a perfect game. She also spent 10 years at the Winnipeg Winter Club as a bowling professional. In 1973, she was awarded the Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt by the provincial government for her membership on the team that won the Women’s World Five-Pin Bowling Championship that year. In 1990, she was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.

For the last several years of her life, she made her home at Dundas, Ontario. She died there on 6 July 2010 and was buried in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens at Winnipeg.
