Raymond Richmond Houghton

Businessman, municipal official.
Born in Birkenhead, England on 31 August 1871, son of Andrew Raymond Houghton (1827-1902) and Elizabeth Mary Houghton (?-?), he came to Canada in 1888 and settled in Belmont that year. Along with his brother, Andrew Charlton Houghton, they formed the Houghton Land Corporation.
He served as the first clerk of the Rural Municipality of Strathcona and was also a notary public, clerk of the county court, insurance agent, chairman of the town board and warden of the Anglican Christ Church in Belmont. He was among the first to purchase property at Manhattan Beach and had a cottage there for decades.
He was married twice, first on 17 November 1897 to Annie Kathleen Burnett (1879-1901) at Turtle Mountain. They had two daughters: Frances Beatrice Houghton (1898-1981, wife of George Cockerill) and Enid Cordelia Houghton (1900-1958, wife of Lawrence Walter “Larry” Clayton). On 15 September 1920, he married Madge Timmins (1880-1864).
He died at Belmont on 17 December 1942 and was buried at Belmont Hillside Cemetery.
