Born at Hemford, Nova Scotia on 1 November 1866, son of George Frederick William Hirtle (1835-1919) and Louisa Ann Meisner (1837-1917), he came to Winnipeg around 1905.
He was married twice, first on 26 August 1890 to ? with whom he had a daughter: Edna Viola Hirtle (1891-1975, wife of William Thomas Tate). On 6 June 1905, he married Hannah Laura Wallace (1875-1962) at Winnipeg and they subsequently had four children: Fern Mildred Hirtle (1907-2004, wife of Harry Sylvester White), Ella Jean Hirtle (1909-1990, wife of Richard "Dick" Howard), Lawrence James Albert Hirtle (1911-1999), and George Frederick Wallace Hirtle (1916-?). He was a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters.
He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 9 December 1958 and was buried in the St. Vital Cemetery.
