Memorable Manitobans: Robert George Hill (1947-2026)

Architect, historian.

Born at Toronto, Ontario in 1947, son of Leighton and Edna Hill, he studied Architecture at Ryerson University and the University of Toronto. After working as an architect in New York City, he returned to Toronto and worked with Diamond and Myers and George Baird. With the founding of the firm KPMB Architects in 1987, he took on the role of librarian, historian, and archivist.

In his free time, he travelled throughout Canada to compile a comprehensive inventory of Canadian architects that became the basis of his website Biographical Dictionary of Architects in Canada, 1800-1950. It has information on many architectural projects in Manitoba and biographical information on Manitoba architects.

In recognition of his service, he received a Fellowship in the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the Order of da Vinci from the Ontario Association of Architects, and the Eric Arthur Lifetime Achievement Award from the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario.

He died unmarried at Toronto, Ontario on 21 February 2026.
