Memorable Manitobans: Louis-Raymond Giroux (1841-1911)

Cleric.

Born at Ste. Genevieve, Quebec on 4 July 1841, he was educated at Montreal College (where Louis Riel was a fellow student) then took up Theology, being ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood in May 1863.

He came to the Red River Settlement in July 1868 and was the first Professor and Rector of the Collège de Saint-Boniface. He served as chaplain to Riel’s forces at Fort Garry during the Red River Rebellion of 1869-1870. In the latter year, he was appointed Priest at the Ste. Anne Roman Catholic Church where, in 1898, he contributed personally to construction of a church building.

He died at Ste. Anne des Chênes on 11 November 1911 and was buried in the Ste. Anne Roman Catholic Cemetery. He is commemorated by the community of Giroux.
