Memorable Manitobans: Perry Ginakes (1942-2025)

Restauranteur.

Born at Niata, Greece on 21 February 1942, he came to Canada in 1956 and settled at Winnipeg. He joined his brothers Jimmy Ginakes and John Ginakes in the restaurant business. They operated several restaurants around the city, including the Thunderbird Drive-In Restaurant (1961), Town 'N Country, Studio 44, The Rib Shack, Thunderdog, Kosta’s, and Perry’s.

In 1971, he married Tulla Christakos and they had two sons. The family moved to Sarnia, Ontario for ten years then returned to Winnipeg. He opened the city’s second Pony Corral franchise. He also ran the Bell Tower Cafe at the University of Manitoba.

He died at the St. Boniface Hospital on 1 October 2025.
