Memorable Manitobans: Charles Louis Gillis (1891-1954)

Businessman.

Born in Belgium in March 1891, son of Augustus Gillis and Maria Gillis (1860-?), he came to Canada with his family in 1904. He succeeded his father as President of Gillis Quarries. On 11 April 1918, he married Catherine McDonald Matheson (?-?) at Winnipeg and they had seven children: Louise Marie Gillis (1919-1998, wife of Edward James Davis), Catherine McDonald “Kay” Gillis (1920-2014, wife of Robert V. Brown), Margaret Gillis (wife of Edward M. “Ted” Yaxley), Charles A. “Charlie” Gillis (1923-1995), Victor Bruce Gillis (1926-2005), Frank Lawrence Gillis (?-2011), and Adair L. Gillis (wife of Ivan Bickell). He died at the Grace Hospital on 26 September 1954 and was buried in the Little Britain Cemetery.
