Memorable Manitobans: Anna Margaret Ruth Whitely Garven (1888-1960)Educator. Born at Winnipeg on 6 March 1888, eldest daughter of Thomas Whitely (1844-1914) and Isabella Gemmnell “Isabel” McNichol (1857-1938), she grew up in Township 5 Range 6W (1901) and attended teacher training. She taught at Sharon School (1908-1909, 1910), Utopia School (?-?), and was Principal of Birds Hill School (1912-1914). While at Birds Hill, she met Francis Ernest Garven (1877-1954, son of Aexander B. B. Garvin [Garven]) and married in the Rural Municipality of Thompson on 7 October 1914. By 1926, they adopted a son, Mark Borthwick Garven (c1919-?) and lived in Birds Hill for many years before retiring to Winnipeg. She died at Winnipeg on 20 July 1960 and was buried in the Sunnyside Cemetery.
