Memorable Manitobans: James Edward “Jim” Foran (1937-2014)

Lawyer.

Born at Winnipeg on 3 July 1937, eldest of six children of Frank Edward Foran (1914-1994) and Margaret Mary Gilbert (1912-2009), he attended St. Paul’s High School and the University of Manitroba, receiving from the latter a Governor General’s Gold Medal for Academic Proficiency. In 1959, he served as President of the University of Manitoba Students’ Union.

He received a law degree in 1962 and practiced for over 40 years with the firm of Aikins, MacAulay & Thorvaldson, specializing in transportation law. In 1985, he was made a Queen’s Counsel. He was the Returning Officer for the Wolseley constituency in the 1962 provincial general election. He retired in 2008.

On 19 August 1961, he married Margaret Anne “Mae” MacLeod and they had four sons and four daughters.

He died at Winnipeg on 1 April 2014 and was buried in the Assumption Cemetery.
