Memorable Manitobans: James Edward “Jim” Foran (1937-2014)Lawyer. Born at Winnipeg on 3 July 1937, eldest of six children of Frank Edward Foran (1914-1994) and Margaret Mary Gilbert (1912-2009), he attended St. Paul’s High School and the University of Manitroba, receiving from the latter a Governor General’s Gold Medal for Academic Proficiency. In 1959, he served as President of the University of Manitoba Students’ Union. He received a law degree in 1962 and practiced for over 40 years with the firm of Aikins, MacAulay & Thorvaldson, specializing in transportation law. In 1985, he was made a Queen’s Counsel. He retired in 2008. On 19 August 1961, he married Margaret Anne “Mae” MacLeod and they had four sons and four daughters. He died at Winnipeg on 1 April 2014 and was buried in the Assumption Cemetery.
