Memorable Manitobans: Margaret Adele Bain Fetherstonhaugh (1904-1975)

Musician, community activist.

Born at Winnipeg on 5 September 1904, daughter of Louisa Octavia Dennistoun (1876-1959) and Alexander Bain, she married Edward Phillips Fetherstonhaugh at All Saints Anglican Church on 3 June 1924. They had no children. She took an active role in musical affairs in Winnipeg, serving for many years as President of the Women’s Musical Club. She was also involved in the Wednesday Morning Musicale (1937-1973), Eva Clare Studio Club (1923-1929), and Manitoba Music Festival (1966-1974), where she often played piano as an accompanist. For 25 years, she was President of the Altar Guild of All Saints Anglican Church. She was named the Volunteer of the Year in 1972 and received a Manitoba Good Citizenship Award the same year. She died at Winnipeg on 14 March 1975 and was buried in the St. John’s Cathedral Cemetery. There are papers at the Archives of Manitoba.
