Steve Derewianchuk

Born at Vita on 5 May 1935, one of 14 children of Ukrainian immigrants Alexander Derewianchuk (1886-1972) and Anastasia Maxymowich (1897-1973), after graduating from high school, he taught school for a year then joined Manitoba Hydro where he was employed for 37 years until retirement in 1993. He was posted successively at Pipestone, Selkirk, and Vita.
He was married twice, first to schoolteacher Patricia Marie “Pat” McRae with whom he had a daughter before divorcing in the 1980s. On 3 June 1995, he married Iris Ewanchevich. An avid baseball player, he was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame (2007). The following year, he shared a team induction as a member of the Vita Cubs (1955-1960).
In the 1973 provincial general election, he was elected as a New Democrat for the Emerson constituency. He was defeated in the 1977 general election. He later served as Reeve for the Rural Municipality of Stuartburn (1980-1986). In recognition of his community service, he received a Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal (1977).
He died at Vita on 18 March 2026.
