Memorable Manitobans: Jean Alice Friesen Delorme (1940-2013)

Businesswoman, community activist.

Born at Morden on 6 May 1940 to Justina Sawatzky (1916-2005) and Isbrandt Friesen (1901-1981), she grew up in the Transcona community of Winnipeg. In 1963, she married Denis Joseph Delorme (1936-2005). They made their home in Transcona and went on to have two children.

Her love of fashion led to her first foray into business, selling Beauty Counselors Cosmetics, a venture that she grew into a team of 400 beauty counselors. In 1997, in partnership with her daughter, Kim Delorme, she opened Another Look Bridal Fashions in Transcona, giving brides-to-be the opportunity to purchase their wedding apparel at affordable prices. As a mentor, she gave local fashion technology textiles students the opportunity to experience working in a fashion business while assisting at the bridal shop. As well, she also supplied fashions free of charge for many concerts and fashion shows in the community.

She enjoyed volunteering for her community and participating in its events. In 2005, she won the award for the best business light display in Transcona as part of the Winnipeg Lights Contest, sponsored by Take Pride Winnipeg. She was involved in the Hi Neighbour Festival for over 20 years, organizing the Miss Transcona Pageant, and in 2012, to help celebrate Transcona’s 100th anniversary, she organized a reunion of past Miss Transcona Pageant winners. She was responsible for bringing the “Hi Neighbour Sam” mascot back to Transcona and was awarded a gold “Hi Neighbour Sam” pendant for her efforts.

Always a strong supporter of the Transcona Business Improvement Zone, she served on the BIZ Board as Treasurer, sat on the Transcona Historical Museum Board, and was a member of the Transcona Legion #7. Because of her involvement with the Rotary Club, she was honoured with its Paul Harris Fellow Award. Her strong volunteering efforts throughout the community resulted in her receiving a Mayor’s BIZ Award (2006), a Manitoba Council on Aging Recognition Award (2010), and a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2013).

She died at Winnipeg on 26 January 2013 and was buried in the Transcona Cemetery. In 2022, her name was added to the Transcona Wall of Fame.
