Composer.
Born at Winnipeg in 1939, he studied piano and violin, sang in church choirs, and played in jazz and rock bands in his childhood. In the late 1950s, he attended the University of Manitoba, intending to study Medicine, but instead switched to Indiana University where he graduated with a music degree in 1964. After being organist and choirmaster at Wesley United Church (c1959), he became the music director at the Manitoba Theatre Centre (1964-1966), and composer, arranger, and conductor at CBC Manitoba (1966-1970). He was a freelance composer and arranger (1970-1977) before moving to Toronto where he continued working as a composer, writing musical scores for CBC, CTV, National Film Board of Canada, PBC, 20th Century Fox, and Warner Brothers. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Manitoba (2007) and was inducted into the Order of Canada (2014). He died at Toronto in September 2026.
