Memorable Manitobans: Krishnamurti “Dak” Dakshinamurti (1928-2022)

Biochemist, human rights advocate.

Born at Vellore, India in 1928, his views on human rights were informed by a meeting with Mahatma Gandhi during a student rally that he organized. He came to Winnipeg in 1965, married his wife Ganga Dakshinamurti, and worked as a biochemist at the University of Manitoba and was an advisor to the St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre. He retired as Emeritus Professor in 1998 but continued to research and write into his 90s. In 2007, he founded the Mahatma Gandhi Centre in Winnipeg. In recognition of his community service, he was inducted into the Order of Manitoba (2020). He died at Winnipeg on 13 October 2022.
